Steering through uncharted waters: Techniques, tips and teaching for uncertainty tolerance

This presentation explores uncertainty alongside strategies for adaptively responding to it. We will define and name features of uncertainty (e.g. complexity, ambiguity, probability) in the academic context, and explore to what extent nature versus nurture impacts our responses to uncertainty. By drawing on diverse sectors (e.g. education, healthcare, business and economics, and science), we will define tools and skillsets to draw upon to help us to appropriately address uncertainty today and tomorrow for ourselves, our peers, and our students. We will discuss how adaptive responses to uncertainty can lead to improved system resilience, workforce wellbeing, and more inclusive academic environments.
Bio
MICHELLE D. LAZARUS, SFHEA, PhD, is the Director of the Centre for Human Anatomy Education and Deputy Director of the Centre for Scholarship in Health Education at Monash University, in Australia. She supports development and delivery of high-quality education in diverse learning contexts both nationally and internationally, working in consultation with secondary school teachers, caregivers, tertiary educators and the clinical workforce. She is an award-winning educator having received the Australian Universities Teaching excellence award, and author of the “The Uncertainty Effect: How to Survive and Thrive through the Unexpected”. Her entire career is a journey into uncertainty.
